So you’ve set up your business with all the fancy-schmancy paperwork, and you’ve been working hard for a while. You’re first starting out and you’re doing every which thing, every which method you’ve read online, and trying to scramble to figure out what will work the fastest to grow your business so you can start making money.
You’re probably stressed out, writing in your planner and then maybe neglecting it somewhere buried beneath paperwork on your desk.
Or maybe you’re doing the same task but scattered about between steps, doing some steps some of the time, and other times just skipping a bunch of steps altogether. It’s overwhelming, takes up more time, and you feel like you can’t keep up!
You’re wondering how other business owners get growth in their businesses, and keep up with it all, on top of having a life outside of their businesses!
How do you grow this seedling business you’ve planted without wanting to jump off a bridge?
I totally get it – it’s crazy the amount of stuff we have to do in businesses when we’re first starting out, especially if you’re flying solo and trying to figure out which way is up!
It’s so overwhelming sometimes, trying to figure out how to keep your sanity and get it all done each day (and sometimes it feels like the day only lasts about 2 hours) – how could anyone try to scale their business if they’re already overwhelmed and running out of time?
I’m here to help! In this post I’m going to show you some helpful strategies to help you scale your business by telling you the strategies that businesses use to grow without going crazy.
Ready?! Let’s do it!
Business Growth Strategy #1 | Identify Priorities
So right now, you’re kind of trying to figure out what it is that’s most important, and hoping that some of the things don’t fall through the cracks, right?
You’re trying to dedicatedly use your planner to figure out what to do next – but also dealing with a zillion emails in your inbox that all seem to scream important, as well as taking courses that promise to help you with all of this.
Take a breath!
Understand: It is possible to do it! We just have to figure out our one thing.
If you’ve ever read Gary Kellers book The ONE Thing, you know that there is ONE thing in your business that drives everything forward right now. You know that if you determine the ONE thing, you will know exactly what to do next, and you can feel relieved knowing that you are working on the right things, at the right times.
So – what is it that is going to push your biz forward and move that needle?
If you determine that and hold that thing as a priority above ALL else, then you’ll help your business grow to the next level, because you’re focusing on that one domino that gets all the others moving.
For me and The Success Mountain at this moment in time, it’s creating content!
If I create content and blog posts, I know that I am creating Pinterest images along with those, and my second priority is social media, so I can spread the word about the great content for you. So I know if I choose blogging as my priority, I’m accomplishing multiple things within that blogging umbrella.
Business Growth Strategy #2 | Create Systems & Processes
So if you’re struggling with eliminating overwhelm and wondering how you’re going to even grow this thing without going crazy, you likely don’t have the best systems in place to keep things going quickly and smoothly.
You’re probably putting a lot of things in your planner, only to realize that you either don’t do them, or run out of time to do them.
The problem with this is that you’re putting the chicken before the egg.
You first need to take a little while to write down the processes you’ve learned from your business research, and then put them in a coherent process that you can follow each time.
Then, after some time of completing these tasks a few times, you’ll be able to change and edit these as you go along.
Remember: The way you do tasks for your business won’t be the same way that you learned from someone else. It’s always going to adapt and be different for everyone’s situation.
When you start writing down your processes, you can easily repeat the same tasks quickly, more efficiently.
Doing this will calm that overwhelm that every business owner seems to have as you’re starting your new business.
To get started with this and get more clarity in your business, go ahead and start writing down the steps for each task you do. This will take time, but it will be well worth it! It helps with your consistency without you having to do MORE work later! It will save you time!
You’ll find that you have certain tasks you do over and over, and that you want to add or remove steps that need to be changed. Good! Keep it up! Then, refer to the checklist each time you do that task.
Business Growth Strategy #3 | Outsource and Delegate
After creating your processes, you should have a basic idea of the same methodical routines you have for the business tasks you do each day.
Now, you need to focus on refining those, and handing them off to someone else so that you can focus on other business-y things.
Otherwise, you’ll be stuck doing the run-around every day, and you won’t be able to see the big picture – which is required (this is not optional) if you want to grow your business bigger.
CEO’s gotta CEO!
CEO’s not gotta do small, menial tasks.
To delegate, most business owners focus on hiring an overseas virtual assistant. I have the exact steps for you on how to do this here, and I even have a free workbook that will help you hire a virtual assistant for your business in just 5 days!
Now before you’re all: omg hiring someone? I can’t do that, I’m not ready! Realize that you won’t ever be ready, and that yes, you’ll be scared to let go of your control of your baby business plantling (a plantling is a baby plant, right? We’re goin with it)!
But think of it like sending your baby off to kindergarten (now our baby plant is going to kindergarten) to be taught by another teacher. You have to do it!
It will be okay, and everything won’t fall apart. I often hear from entrepreneurs that they don’t need to outsource because they have it all under control.
Trust me: you don’t!!
I mean that in the nicest way, but you need someone to be working on those tasks that you either hate, that take too long for you to do, that eat into your dollars per hour, and that don’t allow you to focus on what’s important – your overall business strategy and progress!
You’ll thank me later, I promise!
Business Growth Strategy #4 | Automate! Automate! Automate!
Auuuutomate your biz – come on!
“To automate is to free up ye time.” Didn’t William Shakespeare say that or something? Just kidding – but I bet he would have really loved a keyboard and a word processor!
At least that would free up some time, so he could have written more amazing things for us to admire from history afar.
Think of automation as the magical tools that will eliminate (sometimes miniscule) tasks that, over time, add up to hours of time that you can’t get back in your business. There’s software you can use such as Zapier that will “zap” things from one program (such as Trello) to another program (such as Dropbox). There’s several software’s out there that help with automation, so it really depends what software you are currently using for your business.
I would recommend spending several hours finding ways to automate particular tasks of your business. Zapier is a great place to start. Butler for Trello is another great one!
So what things can we automate?
Here’s a million things:
- Bill pays
- Website backups
- Emails to your customers who ask for help
- Emails thanking your customers for purchasing
- Literally any email
- ALL of your sales funnels and sales pipelines
- Contacting new leads
- Getting new leads from your opt-ins
- Training new employees (use a software like Process Street and your business systems to automate this)
- Your to-do lists
- Spreadsheet changes to trigger ITTT (If this happens, then that triggers) new Trello cards, new emails to be sent, new tasks to be created, etc.
- Your monthly checklists, quarterly reminders, yearly reminders
- Customer satisfaction surveys
- Emails asking for customer referrals
- Unsubscribing from a billion email lists
- Remembering passwords and changing password (using a software like LastPass)
- Social media: Post automatically on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Google+, etc
- Client on-boarding
- Client off-boarding
- Team projects using a software like Asana or Trello
- Employee projects using same software, or something again like Process Street
Business Growth Strategy #5 | Collaboration
Right now, it’s hot in the online industry to say “community before competition” and I find that I agree.
Only a small number of things are more important than collaborating and networking with new people in your audience, niche, or market to kickstart business growth.
Here are some of my favorite ways to collaborate with influencers:
- Facebook groups
- Swapping links on your site
- Creating bundles of products to hold a giveaway to someone in your audience
- Collaborate on a video series together
- Do a blog post series
- Guest posting
- Hold challenges
- Go to networking events like tradeshows, conferences or meetups
There’s a ton of different ways you can network and communicate with your people. It’s actually one way you can grow your business very quickly, because you’re actually utilizing their audience (and they, you) to let their audience know you exist.
As Grant Cardone says – your biggest problem is obscurity. People just simply don’t know about you! So let’s let them know! Get out there and do some collabs!
So, these are my five major tips to grow and scale your business faster. You’ve learned the importance of automation, writing down processes, using software, delegating, and collaborating! These steps are a good start to get you driving down clarity road! It’s a nice drive, I think you’ll like it!
Your little baby business planty will be next to you in the car, happily growing before your very eyes, and you’ll be singing along to that annoying Celebrate song, because I put it in your head earlier.
And you’ll have the time to take a drive knowing that you’ve set up systems in place to have more free time, while your business grows automatically! You’ve got systems, you’ve got software, you’ve got priorities – you’re a modern day Hermione!
